It seems Nintendo has had quite the success with their latest console. The past three years have offered big titles like Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which in particular was a major portion of their sales ever since the game released this past March. As of October, 22.5 million units of the Nintendo Switch have been sold in the US, contributing greatly to Nintendo’s reported booming profits.

According to the latest sales data from the NPD Group, Nintendo sold 735,926 units of the Switch and Switch Lite in the United States last month, helping to maintain the Switch family’s spot as the best-selling console in the US for the 23rd consecutive week. This was a 136% increase in sales in comparison to the year prior. With Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity around the corner, Breath of the Wild 2 still in development, and many other exciting projects in the works, it is very likely that Nintendo will continue this momentum, especially as we head into the holidays. The Switch indeed has the potential to go two full years as the United States’ best-selling console.

Only time will tell if the releases of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series S and X will knock Nintendo off of its pedestal. Either way, it’s no surprise that video game and console sales have been reaching unprecedented heights. With the pandemic, consumers are spending more time in their homes, and are taking the opportunity to either introduce themselves to gaming or continue a life-long love of the practice. Competition aside, the increase of video game popularity has proven 2020 a success for the video game industry.
