The advent of the Nintendo Switch has brought many joys to the gaming world. Numerous ports, new stories, and old stories with new adventures have made the Switch a highly sought-after gaming console. A six-month earning statement, for the period ending September 30, 2020, shows that Nintendo yearly net sales are up by 73.3%. The net profit had an even bigger increase of $2 billion USD (213 billion yen), which is an increase of 243.6%.

Switch and Switch Lite consoles saw an increase of 80.9% in sales from last September. 8.36 million standard Switch consoles were sold, with 5.17 million Switch Lites, adding up to a whopping 12.53 million Switch consoles sold during this six month period. Software sales played a huge part in Nintendo’s massive increase, with sales jumping from 58.49 million to 100.25 million within the last year thanks to some highly anticipated games (I’m looking at you, Animal Crossing: New Horizons).

All this success has Nintendo forecasting for a 50% increase in net profit for next year. The software sells are anticipated to reach 170 million units, outperforming last year’s 168 million units. Nintendo also has big plans for the Switch as well. Originally, Nintendo had set their Switch sales prediction for 19 million units being sold, but are now anticipating upwards of 24 million! This forecast isn’t uncalled for either, as Nintendo stated that the Switch has officially outsold the NES worldwide.

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was originally released in Japan in 1983, making its way to North American in 1985. After almost 40 years from its initial release, the NES has a total of 61.91 million units sold; before the Switch overtook it in units sold, the NES was the second highest selling Nintendo home console behind the Wii.

Within its short lifespan, the Nintendo Switch has already 68.30 million units sold, expecting to sell a third of the 68 million within the next year.
