maxresdefault To top off his 2015 year of covers, Youtube’s Banjo Guy Ollie produced a cover of Mabe Village from Link’s Awakening on– you guessed it– a banjo. He also employed a host of other instruments including a U-Bass, Bouzouki/Mandola, and Mandolin. The cover really does this great tune justice, and the banjo gives it a unique and rather cozy tone that fits the song’s role in the game perfectly. Banjo Guy Ollie’s version of Mabe Village is not to be missed, so take a listen after the jump!

In the caption for this video Ollie said, “The Mabe Village theme from Zelda Link’s Awakening is so evocative to me. It always conjures images of playing the game under a blanket on a quiet winter holiday with a cup of hot chocolate beside me… I thought it’d be nice to end the year on a quiet, slightly melancholic, yet full of goodness, note. I love this piece (and game)…”

I feel that this cover conveyed his feelings about the song pretty well, and as a fellow Link’s Awakening lover I must concur that this song is reminiscent of good times (there will always be a special place in my heart for passionate musicians who take the time to recreate the incredible music from this incredible game). Banjo Guy Ollie has also covered songs from A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time, as well as published a speedpaint of the Great Deku Tree. If you choose to, you may support him on Patreon and download his tracks on iTunes.

What do you think of this cover? Does the banjo help or hurt the song? Are there any other Link’s Awakening songs you’d like to hear covered in this style? Share your thoughts in the comments!
