To me, Breath of the Wild was a complete testament to The Legend of Zelda series. With its massive and intricate world, intriguing story, unforgettable characters, and fresh, yet familiar take on the series, I felt like I was 7 years old again, playing through Ocarina of Time when I played it for the first time. This incarnation of our beloved Link and Zelda have gained so much love from fans (myself included) due to their unique design and character development, so I was absolutely thrilled to know that their story isn’t quite finished yet! Breath of the Wild left me feeling satisfied (a tear or two may have been shed at the end) but also wanting so much more when the camera panned over the field of blooming Silent Princesses during the last scene.

So to say that I was excited at the announcement that this brilliant game would be getting a direct sequel would be an understatement!

I was absolutely ecstatic–for a few reasons.

For one, sequels are a bit of a rarity in the Zelda universe, especially when you consider that the last game to get a direct sequel was Ocarina of Time which was followed by the sinister Majora’s Mask. But even then, while Majora involves the Hero of Time, the setting isn’t in Hyrule and the story is very far removed from other Zelda games. This upcoming sequel could be one of the only Zelda games that builds upon and expands its predecessor’s existing world, which sounds absolutely brilliant in my opinion!

But as much as I am thrilled for this sequel, I’ve been thinking: could Breath of the Wild be Zelda’s first ever trilogy? With how absolutely massive this version of Hyrule is, and the sheer amount of lore surrounding it, I think it would be easy to create even a third epic story set in this world we know and love. A trilogy could redefine storytelling in Zelda, and solidify itself as the series’ version of The Lord of the Rings (which is the greatest trilogy ever. Try and change my mind.)

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s let the sequel release first before we start considering what comes next.

What do you think? Should the Breath of the Wild saga become the series’ first trilogy? Let me know in the comments!
