The Sheikah are back in a big way in Breath of the Wild. But one Sheikah warrior who hasn’t made an appearance in a mainline Zelda game since her debut in Ocarina of Time is Sheik. With Zelda chopping off her flowing locks, and presumably having a more active role in the sequel, will we finally see the return of this mysterious character?

In terms of plot, Sheik’s return wouldn’t have made sense in the titles that followed Ocarina of Time. This is largely because the Sheikah race is hardly present in those titles, apart from Impa in Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. But if you consider the residents of Kakariko Village, it’s Monks, and the Yiga Clan, Breath of the Wild’s overworld is populated by Sheikah descendants like never before.

So, when whatever evil awakened at the start of Breath of the Wild 2 breaks loose, there’s a real possibility that Zelda could transform herself into Sheik once more — red eyes and all, with just a drop of magic! This iteration of Sheik could be unique in a lot of ways, too. First off, Sheikah technology is a major focus in Breath of the Wild, so that might shape Sheik’s inception and skill set. Also, with there being so many Sheikah, there’s no reason why someone other than Princess Zelda couldn’t take up the role.

Our own Heather Beard suggests that Impa’s granddaughter Paya could shock the world and pop-up as Sheik. And Rod Lloyd thinks Nintendo could subvert expectations and have a random male Sheikah appear as the character, tricking all of the fans who would assume Sheik was just Zelda in disguise. On that note, Sheik might even appear as an enemy, like part of the Yiga Clan.
