Tears of the Kingdom Voted Top Game By The Famitsu Super Popular Game Awards 2023

Tears of the Kingdom continues to collect accolades, and it’s not difficult to see why. Tears was literally built on Breath of the Wild’s successes and improved on many of that game’s weaknesses. The latest Zelda adventure picked up Game of the Year nods from both IGN and Game Informer. And while it did fall short of The Game Award’s Game of the Year, it did take home Best Action/Adventure game.
Famitsu, the Japanese gaming magazine, recently announced Tears of the Kingdom as their top game of 2023. The publication’s “Super Popular Game Awards” are decided by voters consisting of 188 Japanese game developers and “game fan celebrities.”
Here’s the list of the top 5 winners:
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
- Final Fantasy XVI
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Suika Game
- Armored Core 6
It’s interesting to note that the only game in common on all the lists mentioned above is Tears of the Kingdom. Notably absent from the Famitsu list is Baldur’s Gate III and Alan Wake II, both of which appear on The Game Awards’ Game of the Year nominees list, IGN’s Game of the Year list, and Game Informer’s Games of the Year list. Super Mario Bros. Wonder meanwhile is on the Famitsu list, The Game Awards list, and the Game Informers list.
To me, the most surprising game on Famitsu‘s list is Suika Game (also known as Watermelon Game), which is primarily a mobile title. It’s a fun, little game that’s kind of a combination of 2048 and Tetris, with some quirky physics thrown in. I do not quite comprehend how it’s competing against games like Tears, Final Fantasy XVI, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but perhaps that speaks more to Famitsu‘s focus on gameplay than anything else.
What do you think? Should Tears of the Kingdom have received this award? Does its placement on so many different lists speak more to how great of a game it is? Let us know in the comments!
