Is Navi really a pest?

September 21 2013 by Parker

“Hey, Listen!” Who could have predicted in 1998 that these two innocent words, articulated by a winged ball of light, would become the bane of countless Zelda fans? Yet besides Kaepora Gaebora’s notoriously long-winded speeches, the infamous catchphrase of Link’s fairy companion Navi is probably the most common points of criticism leveled at Ocarina of Time. Detractors claim her often-repeated exclamations are unbearable; her personality obnoxious. Not even Tingle is demonized to such an extent. When faced with such vocal and ingrained…

Zelda stories have changed. You could make the argument that many follow the same framework, with a princess being captured at some point, a villain wreaking havoc, and a world to save. Medallions or other relics might play a role in unlocking something somewhere. However, you could also take a look first at the original, 8-bit Legend of Zelda, where most of the character interaction consisted of talking to old men who were disconnected from the rest of the world,…

At the start of this weekly feature, I said one thing I loved about the community comics was ability to give more depth to some of the characters and fill in some of the gaps that are skimmed over by the game. And of course, what happens is everyone’s own opinion, but I think we all have some idea, and sometimes those ideas can be universal. This week, with Magical Game Time, we take a glimpse at perhaps what some…

It is widely known that during Nintendo’s development of Majora’s Mask in order to save time during the development process and get the game out a lot earlier, they used Ocarina of Time’s game engine and character models. That became the reason why there were a lot of characters from Ocarina of Time found in Majora’s Mask. Although the same characters were used in both games some of them possess very obvious differences if you were to compare the two….

The Zelda franchise is famously premised on exploration. The original Legend of Zelda offered a world one could literally get lost in. Different mechanics — ranging from action to puzzle-solving — affected the way the player explored the world, but there could be little question that the whole purpose of the game was to discover. Zelda games have always struck an interesting balance. Like Nintendo’s other major adventure franchise, Metroid, Zelda games offer the player items which both advance the…

Over at Den of Geek, an article has been published talking about how Link is one of the most enduring characters in video games. They list the reasons behind their statement during the article and also talk about the differences between Link and certain main characters in other game series. Aside from owning the coolest hat in gaming, Link’s also one of the few left-handed protagonists in the medium (though this was sadly altered in Twilight Princess in order to…

YouTube channel TheNintendoDaily has released a new video of some Skyward Sword footage! In this short clip, we see a new character, one who has been mentioned before: Batreaux. In this undetermined section of the game, the mysterious monster comes face to face with Link. This close to Skyward Sword’s release date, I didn’t think we’d see many more videos, so this is a neat, little snippet. I warn you, though, there are spoilers in the video after the jump.

The Legend of Zelda series has, for most of its lifespan, been viewed as a franchise with a quality story. Nowadays, we have rich lore to draw from, to formulate complex theories about multiple timelines and Hyrules, multiple versions of the main characters and side characters. But things weren’t always like that. The original Legend of Zelda was straightforward. The story was simply a quest from point A to point B, and the gamer was left to fill in the…

The GDC 2011 trailer for Skyward Sword showed us many interesting things. We saw more areas and enemies, more examples of what the gameplay will be like, and we also saw the game’s unusual focus on technology. But it seems that among all the news, the “new” character of Skyward Sword is the most talked about. And rightfully so. Other than developer statements about the titular Skyward Sword and Skyloft, this character is the first thing we’ve seen of the…
