Nintendo Says There’s a Reason Why Breath of the Wild 2’s Title is Being Kept Secret

During the most recent Nintendo Direct shown at this year’s E3 virtual event, fans were given a long-awaited teaser trailer for the upcoming sequel to Breath of the Wild. Many fans, like myself, were a little disappointed that a title was not revealed during the trailer; but after this recent bit of news, I’m not so disappointed now. In a recent interview, Nintendo has revealed that there is a really good reason as to why they are keeping the title under wraps for now.
In an interview with IGN, Nintendo Treehouse’s Bill Trinen and Nate Bihldorff revealed more about the upcoming Zelda adventure, which Nintendo is still officially calling “the sequel to Breath of the Wild.” Apparently, Nintendo is currently not ready to reveal the full title because doing so would clue players in to what might happen in the main story of the game:
“As for why we’re holding back on the name, you’ll just have to stay tuned because, obviously, Zelda names are kind of important. Those subtitles… they start to give little bits of hints about maybe what’s going to happen.”
[Breath of the Wild 2] is going to be shorthand and it’s natural for people to want to find a shorthand way to frame it. We’re still calling it the sequel to Breath of the Wild.“
I sounds like the title is going to be meaningful, based on that response. And, as a long-time Zelda fan, that means a lot to me, and I’m sure it will to many other players.
In the past, Zelda titles have always had some sort of meaning. A title might represent a concept or theme, like Breath of the Wild, or might make mention of an important item, like Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, or even Majora’s Mask. Whatever the title of this new game might be, it looks like it will give us a hint as to what we might have to look forward to when we return to the wilds of Hyrule.
It sounds like we still have to wait a little bit longer for a title, but with the game set to release in 2022, hopefully we won’t have to wait too much longer. As we come closer and closer to the new year, I imagine that we’ll start to hear more information. So for now, until the title is officially revealed, we can all still call it Breath of the Wild 2 and speculate on what the sequel will be called.
