An image posted to Reddit a few days ago shows an excerpt of an interview in Game Informer with Hiromasa Shikata, the Director of A Link Between Worlds.

The image shows the text of a question that asks if there any Majora’s Mask references in A Link Between Worlds that we may have missed. The answer given is,

[Having Majora’s Mask in Link’s house] was a special request from Aonuma’s production team. Now why would they ask us to do that? – Hiromasa Shikata

The answer seems playful, even teasing that there might be more to those references than just a fun easter egg that Nintendo decided to put into the game.

Ever since the reveal of Majora’s Mask hanging on the wall in Link’s house in A Link Between Worlds, many people have thought this might be a hint that a sequel or remake of Majora’s Mask is coming. Now I know the topic of Majora’s Mask has been beat to death here at Zelda Informer, but can you blame us? This game was a big part of our childhood, and we still can’t help but show our love for one of our favorite games. For many of you the game you love is Kingdom Hearts, or Final Fantasy, or Mass Effect. For many of us at Zelda Informer, it’s Majora’s Mask. I love this game. I love it so much that the image at the beginning of this article is a photograph I took of a Majora’s Mask hanging on my wall that my girlfriend made and painted by hand for me.

So does this new information show that we might be seeing something related to Majora’s Mask in the future? It’s possible, I think even probable. I think 2014 might be the year we get an announcement about it. Not only have we seen Majora’s Mask in both A Link Between Worlds and Animal Crossing: New Leaf, but Skull Kid was recently announced as an assist trophy in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS. Nintendo is not against remakes as we’ve seen, so it will only be a matter of time until they get through all of their current projects and come to Majora’s Mask, a file that may have been collecting dust for a while now. But when it gets picked up and brushed off, Aonuma and his team may decide to give us a remake or an entirely new game set in the universe of Majora’s Mask, which I would be very happy with. There’s a chance all of these easter eggs are meaningless, but I feel Nintendo is leading up to something. We all just have to be patient.

What do you think? Will we be returning to Termina one day, or are all of these references just easter eggs in the Zelda universe? Let us know what you think in the comments!
