Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was presented live at Tokyo Game Show yesterday, with the live stream boasting over 10 minutes of gameplay footage, an exciting character reveal, and a few more surprises. But the festivities didn’t stop there, as even more of Age of Calamity was shown off at the streaming event Game Live Japan 2020. The over 20 minutes of game footage shown at the event revealed several locations in Hyrule that appear to carefully match up with locations in Breath of the Wild, including the Breach of Demise and Death Mountain, and showed the Goron Champion Daruk in action for the first time.

The first segment of gameplay primarily featured Link leading Hyrule’s soldiers into battle against Bokoblins and Wizzrobes. Most notable is Link’s ability to use the paraglider in battle; he can soar above enemies and strike from the skies! Our hero is accompanied by the miniature Guardian character introduced during yesterday’s stream (who some affectionally call “Baby Guardian”), Impa, and Princess Zelda herself. As he progresses, Link eventually comes upon a Guardian Stalker, and the clip ends just as Link uses his shield to parry the Guardian laser attack.

The second segment of gameplay featured the landscape of Death Mountain, where food actually cooks when left on the ground! We also learned that the Elemental Rods from Breath of the Wild will be part of the players arsenal. You can take advantage of the Ice, Fire, and Lightning Rods which will be available to multiple characters in the game, alongside the Sheikah Slate and its Runes.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the gameplay footage was seeing both Daruk and Impa during battle. The characters faced off against Boss Moblins in true Warrior style, and even came up against lesser enemies, including Octoroks and Chus.

Young Impa Boasts Strategic Moves!

Viewers were treated to more combat moves from Impa, who appears to share many of the fighting abilities of Monk Maz Koshia — particularly the ability to create copies of herself to attack enemies. Impa can mark her enemies and, with every defeat, power up another celestial fighting companion.

Daruk In Action!

Daruk uses a powerful Goron Roll attack, along with a big bomb that splits into smaller ones after exploding. Also notable is his temporary invincibility while using Daruk’s Protection. For a big guy, Daruk has the moves and can dodge around his enemies with ease. What’s more, he has a powerful smash attack for the perfect finish!

Warriors Can Share Runes With Individual Effects

While no new characters were announced at this event, there was a slew of additional details that will delight passionate fans. As we learned yesterday, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will allow players to creatively use the Sheikah Slate Runes in a way that matches the spirit of ingenuity in Breath of the Wild. But, as Koei Tecmo explained that these Rune were “character specific,” we weren’t sure if different characters could share Runes.

This new stream clarified the use of Runes in Age of Calamity. While all characters can use the well-known Runes from Breath of the Wild (Magnesis, Stasis, Remote Bombs, etc.), they appear to have different effects depending on the character who utilizes them. Players can use Cryonis as Link to raise ice blocks and launch himself into the air, while Impa can ride around on an ice block to plow over enemy lines. Magnesis was also featured in gameplay, as the player collected metal from around the battlefield to attack enemies. Link manipulated metal boxes and other objects to strike enemies while they spun in the air, while Impa quickly drew in metal objects to club enemies. Finally, Remote Bombs could be used in rapid fire for Link, and, as mentioned above, as one big bomb for Daruk. We can’t wait to see how these Runes work for all characters!
