Since the teaser for the sequel to Breath of the Wild was released at E3 2019, fans have anticipated the possibility of Princess Zelda being a playable character. With her short-cut hair, the fandom is excited to see the princess take on a more active role, especially considering that she is on an adventure with Link himself.

If fan speculation is correct, and Zelda is a playable character in Breath of the Wild 2, it would not be the first time that the titular character of the Zelda series could be controlled. In 2009, Spirit Tracks took advantage of Zelda’s ghostly form to possess Phantoms and progress further in-game.

In fact, Skyward Sword was almost a addition to this list as well. On page 297 of The Legend of Zelda: Encyclopedia, the developer notes for Skyward Sword reveal that a playable Zelda was almost a reality! Known as the “Second Quest”, the story would have followed Zelda’s adventure depicted in the credits of the game, where she falls to the Surface and reawakens as the goddess incarnate. Although shelved during development, it would have been an interesting glimpse to see Zelda’s journey.

I think that seeing the other side of the story would be something unconventional for Zelda games, yet not unwelcome. Although Skyward Sword was consistent as far as plot, character motivations and in-game events go, an adventure from Zelda’s point of view would be a risk I’d be willing to entertain. Aside from new story elements, placing the player in familiar terrain with no initial fighting ability and only their wits seems like an interesting challenge. Perhaps it will be implemented into Breath of the Wild 2.

What do you think? Would you have liked to go on this “Second Quest”? Let us know in the comments below!
