Daily Debate: Would You Be Disappointed if Zelda Needed Rescuing Again in Breath of The Wild 2??

Holy moly. What a tease the new Breath of the Wild sequel trailer put out, right? While I had so many questions going into it, I have way more now that I’ve seen it a few hundred times, (yes, I’ve already watched it that much). But one thing I think we can all agree on is that Princess Zelda, despite her new sassy short haircut and confidence, will probably need to be rescued again. The only glimpse of her that we got in the 90-second trailer was of her falling and disappearing into nothingness, much to Link’s dismay.
Over the past few years, fans have been re-watching the first teaser for the sequel and sharing their opinions. I often read of hopes for a co-op Zelda installment, a playable Zelda, and other wishes for the princess to be more involved in Link’s quest. However, from the look of things, it seems we are due for the same Link saves Zelda trope that we’ve experienced since 1986.
And frankly, I’m okay with that.
I love Breath of the Wild’s incarnation of Zelda. She’s characterized very well with bravery, wisdom, and best of all, flaws. And I love when the story focuses on her growth as a leader and how much she cares for her kingdom, and especially Link (forever a Zelink fan, obviously). But, would this sequel be an actual Zelda game without the age-old formula of Link risking everything to save her and use her help take down the evil force that’s threatening Hyrule?
I don’t think so.
I’m not always a fan of the “damsel in distress” role that Nintendo’s princesses often take on, but this version of Zelda is anything but that. She’s already proven that she’s ready to take on any threat to protect the people she loves, and she doesn’t wait to be saved. Instead, she acts with courage and plays her part, holding back the villain and lending her strength as long as she can until Link can help her finish him once and for all (in other words, the entire premise of Breath of the Wild).
So no, I’m not upset that she will probably need Link’s help again in the sequel, because I know what her true character is. I know she won’t be sitting around and twiddling her thumbs while she waits for him to find her. She will have her own important role to play in what looks to be a dark adventure to take down this frightening corpse of Ganondorf for good.
And I can’t wait to see our hero free her and reunite with her again.
The hype and the shipping is real, guys.
What are your thoughts? Were you assuming Nintendo would mix up the formula a bit when it comes to Breath of The Wild 2? And will you be let down if they haven’t?

She has loved The Legend of Zelda series since she was a little girl because of its equal mix of princesses, besting bad guys, and heartfelt stories. Chakell lives in the overall tame state of Utah, but holds onto her childhood hopes to find an adventure in her backyard one day. She has a degree in English and is a full-time editor for a magazine. You can usually find her gaming (obviously), laughing with her husband, taking a long time to tell stories because she keeps getting distracted; getting sucked into books and podcasts; or snuggling her cute Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
