I believe it’s safe to say that the secondary (and probably tertiary) characters of the Legend of Zelda games contribute in part to our opinions about individual games. By that I mean characters aside from the Big 3 (Link, Zelda, and Ganon/Ganondorf) inform how we regard things like narrative interest, the “world,” and sentimental attachment to a particular game. But what of those “other” characters?

Some characters we love because they’re conflicted, and our knowledge of them grows as they develop throughout Link’s journey. Some other characters we love for precisely the opposite reason: what you see from the beginning is what you get. Sometimes, we love (or hate) characters because of their names alone—“Hello, I am Error.”

Today, I’d like to focus on the former group of characters and ask Zelda Informer fans what they think. To give an example, take a look at Groose from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

At first, he presented himself pretty much as a bully—inconsiderate, self-promoting, and a one-dimensional thorn in the collective side of Skyloft. As the game progresses, however, he becomes less crass than players may have originally thought. He aides Link rather than hinders him, and he develops a sensitive, protective affection for “Granny.” Groose, in other words, showed a memorable character development arc throughout the game. Indeed, he changed so much over the course of the story that he became instrumental in the plot of Skyward Sword.

So I now ask; which character, other than Link/Zelda/Ganon, do you believe has the most development and, more importantly, WHY?

Cheers!
