I’m certain that this question will remain firmly in the hypothetical realm for the foreseeable future, but the idea is very interesting to me. In recent years, many long-time fans of various series have called for that series to “die” or for content to stop being produced under the franchise label. This typically happens when new games in a franchise barely resemble the games these fans fell in love with and could just as easily exist without the stamp of an existing brand. The reason why this doesn’t happen is because brand recognition is a major driver of sales, but what if Nintendo decided to go this route with our favorite franchise? What would the Zelda series’ last hurrah look like?

The broad answer I imagine most would give is that this would have to be the ultimate Zelda game. But what would that mean? For many, this would probably include a concrete conclusion to the series’ narrative arcs. Regardless of how much stock you put in the timeline, it’s only natural to want a sense of closure when a series of such gravity comes to an end. Others might want to see a free-for-all multiverse setup where we see the return of classic characters and elements from the franchise’s past. Personally, I’d like to see a very standardized style of game, in the vein of Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess, expanded to meet Breath of the Wild’s operational freedoms, but not it’s scope or progression freedom.

What about you? If the Zelda series were to conclude with one final game, what would you want out of it? Let us know in the comments below!
