I remember being a Zelda fan during the darkest days of the Wii U. The console, an unmitigated disaster for Nintendo up til that point, had a singular bright spot, a light at the end of the tunnel if you will: Zelda Wii U. The game that we know would eventually go on to become Breath of the Wild was revealed in 2014, and promised a paradigm shift in how the Zelda series was to be played moving forward. We all know what happened next. Delays, radio silence, long droughts of not just Zelda games but ANY games on the Wii U… the time between 2014 and E3 2016 when Breath of the Wild was finally unveiled was a dark, grim time to be a Zelda fan.

Yet, somehow, I would argue that the wait for Breath of the Wild’s sequel has been even more depressing. In a story Zelda fans know all too well, the sequel was delayed, kept a secret, not shown, and generally been a frustrating experience to cover. In the last three years since the game was announced, there’s been about 5 minutes of footage shown and no name assigned to the game yet. While Zelda Wii U was definitely painful, the wait was shorter and there seemed to be a sense of hope around what this game could eventually mean for the series, and what the “NX” (the Switch’s codename at the time) could mean for Nintendo. Compare that to the sequel, which so far, looks, smells, and tastes the same as the original, and it’s hard not to feel like we’re waiting forever for a game that might not blow our socks off like it’s predecessor did.

What do you think, Zelda fans? Which wait was worse? Zelda Wii U, or this current drought we find ourselves in, waiting for any scrap of Breath of the Wild 2 news? Let us know in the comments below!
