If there’s one thing I really enjoy, it’s exploring the world of Hyrule. Ocarina of Time introduced me to the adventure but Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom took it to a whole new level. When I play those latter games, I often imagine little scenarios outside of the official side quests, and I take Link off in various different directions to fulfil them. The most recent quest that I made up was Link backpacking across Hyrule, and that got me thinking about just what route I’d actually take if I found myself in-game.

Somehow, I imagine that I’d start off in Kakariko Village, with plans to stop at every stable I come across. I’d head northwest towards Hyrule Castle Town (post-Calamity, of course), because I’d be super curious to see the place now that it’s Guardian-free. Then, I’d cross Rebonae Bridge and stop at Lookout Landing for a few nights to get my bearings before turning towards the snowy Hebra area. My plan would be to enter into a shield-surfing competition which would fund a large portion of my trip if I won, and to rent a cabin in the mountains where I could enjoy the heat of a roaring fire and watch the snow coming down through the window (I imagine that would be super cosy).

After this, I’d move south in the direction of the Tabantha Frontier, being sure to visit Rito Village to replenish myself after hiking in such cold temperatures. Naturally, I’d have to see Satori Mountain, and hope to glimpse the legendary Lord of the Mountain. Thereafter, my goal would be to witness the Coliseum Ruins and imagine myself victorious at its center! My next destination would take me all the way to Gerudo Town, where I’d spend time learning about Gerudo culture (and trying a Noble Pursuit!).

On the final leg of my backpacking journey, I would go back the way I came, crossing over the Bridge of Hylia. I’d make a wish on a Rupee and throw it in with hopes that it would come true. From there, I’d head through the jungles of the Faron region, taking in the ancient architecture, before going straight to Lurelin Village. Here, I’d take a local job to fund my journey home. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t enjoy lazy days on the beach! I would make the most out of my time here before setting off north with a travelling merchant companion who could give me company and a ride for some miles in his cart. At the end of it all, I’d come home with amazing stories to share and experiences I’ll never forget.

I have to say, I kind of got lost in my own backpacking fantasy there! What did you think of my route, though? And what would be your ideal backpacking route through Hyrule? Let us know in the comments below!
