The Legend of Zelda franchise is full of subtle and not-so-subtle nods from one game to another. All you would need as proof of this is a list of the locations in Breath of the Wild, where you’ll find examples like Mekar Island, Ruto Lake, or Minshi Woods. Musical arrangements from newer additions contain motifs that harken back to classics of the past; the opening notes of the “Title Theme” in Ocarina of Time are all but identical to the song Link plays on the Recorder in the original Legend of Zelda game. Zelda games even pay homage to other Nintendo games, with some of the most famous being the presence of Mario characters in Link’s Awakening and the famous portraits of Mario characters in the courtyard of Hyrule Castle in Ocarina of Time. It’s safe to say that these Easter eggs can generate a lot of conversation, or at least a chuckle at its recognition.

Earlier this year, Nintendo announced that it has begun working on a Legend of Zelda film. This brings an opportunity for the company to either create a new story entirely, or to portray or continue the story from one of the franchise titles. It also brings up a golden opportunity to place some Easter eggs from the franchise into the movie. That being said, here are four Easter eggs I suspect or hope to see in the upcoming feature flick:

1. “You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?”: A truly iconic quote from Majora’s Mask, I’d love to see an actor drop this line in an epic moment.

2. A scene with a wolf who is strangely connected to Link: This implication that the wolf is somehow a representation of the Hero of Time would be a very unique and somewhat subtle moment that would make diehard Twilight Princess defenders very happy.

3. An angry Cucco: We all know what happens when you hurt a Cucco enough times, regardless of whether or not it was on accident. This ongoing joke among the fanbase is prevalent in more than one game, and including it in the film would be a nice nod to the players who have tricked naïve friends into doing this over the years.

4. The Mushroom Kingdom: And now for my dark-horse non-Zelda Easter egg candidate. At some point, a mystical kingdom across the world (or even across space) is mentioned, and discussions on the validity of it will dominate forums for years to come.

The presence of Easter eggs in the Zelda film wouldn’t just reward long-time fans for their knowledge and commitment. The revealing of these surprises to new fans and first-timers might lead them to appreciate the film and franchise more, and to even go so far as to pick up an old game and play.
