As someone who sings Hyrule Warriors’ praises at every available opportunity, I couldn’t be more thrilled about today’s unveiling of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. For as much as I wish we had experienced Breath of the Wild’s unlockable memories firsthand, I never considered the notion of that era being explored via a Warriors game. Honestly, this is why I love Nintendo, folks — you simply cannot predict these guys!

There’s so much to look forward to here, not the least of which being the story itself. My greatest hope from a narrative perspective is that this game will help flesh out the Champions. I want the developers to build a sense of camaraderie among Link, Zelda, and these four heroes; make the Champions’ inevitable demise pack a greater punch than it did in Breath of the Wild.

Given my unhealthy addiction to Hyrule Warriors’ moment-to-moment combat, though, I’m mostly excited to play as these characters. Based on the brief glimpses we’ve seen, the Champions already look to be satisfyingly overpowered. Additionally, I can’t wait to see whether more familiar faces join the roster. Producer Yosuke Hayashi mentioned that the game would feature a “wide variety of playable characters.” Although I’m not expecting a roster nearly as large as that of Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, I’m excited to see just how far they’ll go.
