I remember when I started playing The Wind Waker for the first time. Outside the whimsical, colorful art style, the first major difference I noticed from previous Zelda games was the fact that Link had a close-knit family! Instead of just acting as NPCs without a game-changing purpose, his family added a lot to the story, with Aryll’s kidnapping being the event that throws Link into his quest on the sea. My heart nearly broke when I returned back to Outset Island and found that Link’s grandma was nearly inconsolable and suffering from crippling depression because of her incessant worry about her grandchildren. Link’s family just seemed to add a little something special to the overall feel and flair of The Wind Waker.

Apart from his uncle in A Link to the Past and Zelda’s quick mention of his knightly father (and a cut sister and father according to concept art) in Breath of the Wild, there haven’t been many mentions of any other members of the Link’s family. But I’ve always considered what kind of roles any potential siblings or parents could play in our hero’s journey. They could act as support or perhaps even play a big part of a co-op dungeon. The possibilities are endless! In my opinion, even brief mentions of Link’s family add a little more heart and soul to his character, and if done right, introducing family members could be a great addition to future adventures!

But what about you? Should Link have more family members in future Zelda games? Let me know in the comments below!
