Although Breath of the Wild is one of the bestselling games of all time, many Zelda fans complained at its “pieced together” story, wishing for something a little more linear. I, for one, actually did enjoy the story when it all came together over time. It actually became one of my favorites in the series. I loved watching character development in our two lead characters, and their commitment to working together as well as protecting each other. Also exploring a Hyrule that actually fell to Calamity Ganon was also a melancholy take on Zelda, and finally coming up victorious felt like even more of a triumph in the end. I loved every bit of it.

However, as I’ve played through Tears of the Kingdom, I have to say that this story is superior in my opinion. Although some of it is still set in the past and told through memories, there is still much to be done in the present throughout this adventure. The characters are strong and likable, and Zelda and Link’s development continues to grow in the game. Watching them interact with new characters, and also getting clues as to what they have been up to since the defeat of Calamity Ganon has been pretty special. I think Tears of the Kingdom had some great twists and storytelling to keep me engaged to the point where I was doing everything I could, as fast as I could, just to see how everything was going to work.

In the end, Tears of the Kingdom has become one of my favorite stories of all time. I adored it, and while I also adore Breath of the Wild, I believe its sequel has the superior storytelling.

What about you? What are your thoughts on comparing these two stories? Let me know in the comments!
