Since the very beginning of the Zelda series, the Triforce has been a pivotal part of the story. Even when it doesn’t take a solidified form, the three virtues of courage, wisdom, and power are often represented by Link, Zelda, and Ganon, respectively. It is the relic that bonds the three in an endless battle, and when the pieces are brought together, the Triforce can bring to fruition a desire held by the person who touches it.

It is for this very reason that different versions of Ganon often seek the power of the Triforce, wanting to claim Hyrule as his own in games like Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker. In A Link to the Past and Skyward Sword, we see Link use the Triforce as a means of returning peace and vanquishing evil. However, Skyward Sword hints at the danger in its possible misuse, citing this as the reason for it to be hidden from mortal history.

Although the Triforce has been used as a means of preventing disaster, it has also fueled events that led to it as well. In fact, the Zelda timeline even begins with Demise and his lust for the power of the Triforce. The ensuing war on the Surface started an endless age-spanning battle between good and evil, with the Triforce at its center. A villain seeking the Triforce may even have been the catalyst that led to political unrest and civil war in Hyrule during the events preceding Ocarina of Time.

What do you think? Was leaving the Triforce to Hyrule a mistake? Should the Golden Goddesses have known the trouble it would cause? Or did they mean to test the Hyruleans and their greed? Let us know in the comments below!
