zelda-screenshot-11One could say that this has been one of the longest development cycles of a main series Zelda game ever. It certainly feels that way. But really, we have been waiting for Zelda Wii U for not much longer than we did for, say, Skyward Sword or even Ocarina of Time. The numerous side-games, spin-offs, and remakes, the very early delay after the initial release date was revealed, and of course the obnoxious lack of news, all make time simply drone by while we wait for more of the game, but really, we have been waiting just as long as usual. Still, a lot of time has gone by, and the game has gone through a lot of steps through its creation. Thinking back, there have been some major points of development, all the way back during Skyward Sword‘s development, that have shaped the way the it has come together. Youtuber Commonwealth Realm, with help from Ferris Wheel Productions, has put together a compilation of all the known major development points for Zelda Wii U, starting in 2011.

My, oh my. How long it has been. Remember seeing that first Zelda Wii U trailer during E3? The excitement we all had before knowing of the upcoming delays? Remember being so blown away by the surprise gameplay footage at the Game Awards? Say what you want about Nintendo, but you can’t deny their continuous ability to bring the hype.

That being said, I feel as though we are reaching the end of the development process. As i mentioned, these 4-5 years of development are not unusual for Zelda titles, so I imagine it won’t be long now. I think that we will see a late Q3 or early to mid Q4 release date announced at E3 2016. Before that, though, perhaps we can expect a Zelda Direct, or simply a single trailer at some con, celebrating the nearly complete game, as well as the 30th anniversary.

What do you guys think is up next in this game’s development process? Have you been following the creation of the game since all the way back in 2011? Drop a comment!
