Over the past month, support has continued to grow for a Breath of the Wild-themed LEGO set submitted to the LEGO Ideas website. This set — depicting the game’s version of Hyrule Castle alongside Link, Calamity Ganon, and several Guardians — quickly caught the attention of the Zelda fanbase and, within a few short weeks, garnered the 10,000 supporters needed to qualify for an official review by LEGO.

LEGO announced in a recent blog post that this Hyrule Castle set is one of 26 proposed ideas (including sets inspired by Sonic Mania and Untitled Goose Game) that have qualified for the first review phase of 2020. Over the next several months, a “LEGO Review Board” will examine the project and determine whether or not it has what it takes to be an official LEGO product.

LEGO describes the review phase in this way:

“This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A “LEGO Review Board” composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. We’ll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards.”

If the concept gets the green light, it will then move into the development phase:

“The review is a thorough process and from its start it can take several months. When finished, we make a “go/no go” decision to develop and sell a product based on The Legend of Zelda BotW: Hyrule Castle.

When the review is complete, we will inform you of our decision. If green-lit, this project goes into the longest phase of the project; the Development phase. During this time, LEGO model designers refine the product and develop it for release, we create the product materials (box, instructions, marketing), and get everything ready for a production run. This also takes several months.”

We can also expect to see an interview with BrickGallery, the creator of this Hyrule Castle set, some time down the road, along with interviews with the other creators that have qualified for this review phase.

Hyrule Castle is not the only Zelda-themed LEGO Idea currently under review. A set based on Breath of the Wild‘s Stables qualified for the third LEGO review of 2019, which is currently being evaluated by the LEGO Review Board; results are expected to be revealed Summer 2020. You can read an interview with the creator of this LEGO Idea right here.

The fact that both Hyrule Castle and the Stables are based on a Nintendo property may create additional hurdles for these LEGO sets to become a reality. But given the newly-announced partnership between Nintendo and LEGO, the possibility of official Zelda sets seems all the more likely.

What are your thoughts? Are you hopeful that either of the Zelda-themed LEGO Ideas currently under review will reach the development phase? Were you a supporter of either project? Let us know in the comments below!
