SuniI can imagine many of you have played A Link Between Worlds by now. One new feature in the game is the ability for Link to turn into a drawing and move across walls. Whether or not you enjoyed the actual feature, it is undoubtedly a fun and original concept. Several of the game’s makers, including the director, talked with the Japanese video game magazine Famitsu and discussed the inception of the wall painting idea within the game and the puzzles associated with it.

In all, the director, Hiromasa Shikata, the lead programmer, Shiro Mouri, and lead designer, Koji Takahashi were interviewed together. Shikata talks about the initial idea below.

The thought of having Link become a drawing on a flat surface seemed interesting to me; an idea that came out of nowhere. However, I thought that simply having him be part of a flat surface would’ve made it no different than a side-scrolling game, so we thought it would be better to have him turn along the corners of the walls, after further consulting with the [other members of staff].”

The other people interviewed went on to talk about working out the mechanics of the ability and coming up with the puzzles featured in the game such as Super Mario 64 influencing their work. View the full article for more comments by the developers on this subject.
