Like many of you, I have received my “Spotify Wrapped” this week, informing me of all the cringey music I’ve been listening to in secret. The not-cringey-but-actually-awesome ZREO: Second Quest showed up on my top five artists, as I frequently find myself visiting their orchestral versions of Zelda songs in search of some filling nostalgia. I was surprised, however, to find my Wrapped story accompanied by a video of lead composer Ari Barack Fisher thanking me for my support, and promising something exciting in the coming days.

Unless they’ve got another big announcement up their sleeves, that “something” is the fresh releases of ZREO Legacy Soundscapes Selections and ZREO Legacy Majora’s Mask Selections, as announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter) last week.

ZREO, which stands for Zelda Reorchestrated, has been recreating our favorite songs from the franchise for almost twenty years. They recently ended a decade-long hiatus with their first Legacy album coming in March of last year.

Some of their renditions arguably surpass their originals, introducing new timbre and fuller sound. In Soundscapes, the background chatter of the crowd in Ocarina of Time‘s “Market,” and the rustling waves and winds heard in The Wind Waker‘s “The Great Sea” envelope us into the environments they comes from. In Majora’s Mask Selections, the chanting voices in “Stone Tower Temple” make an already epic dungeon theme that much more haunting, and their recreation of “Milk Bar” makes it feel like you’re experiencing a live band in the basement tavern.

Stay tuned for information on upcoming ZREO: Second Quest and ZREO Legacy releases by signing up for the team’s newsletter, joining their Discord server, and following ZREO: Second Quest on FacebookInstagram, X, and YouTube. You can also support them further by checking out their Patreon and exploring their official website.

Have you taken the time to listen to these new releases? (If not, you really should!) What songs stand out to you? What are you hoping to hear next from ZREO: Second Quest? What cringey music did make my top five? Sound on in the comments!
