Zelda’s Adventure is one of the three infamous Zelda games released for the Phillips CD-i in the 1990s. Most of the time, Zelda fans like me try to forget that these games exist. Sometimes, however, I look into my dreams and vividly remember terrifying circus music, spiders that sound like men, and harps with horizontal strings.

Unlike Zelda: The Wand Of Gamelon and Link: The Faces Of Evil, Zelda’s Adventure is a top-down adventure reminiscent of the original Zelda game in 1986, as well as successors A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening. This is why developer John Lay decided to look past the oddities and port Zelda’s Adventure by remaking it into the style of Game Boy Zelda games. Lay’s faithful adaptation looks and plays far more polished than the original, though the charm decreases through the lack of zany uniqueness that sets apart Zelda’s Adventure from games that are loved un-ironically.

The demake is available here to play, via either a Game Boy Emulator or simply in browser on the website itself. You can also play the game on an original Game Boy console via custom firmware. Lay developed the game with GB Studio, and the music was composed by Beatscribe.
