Wii U Link Zelda fans everywhere suffered from the disappointing news of Zelda Wii U’s not all that surprising delay. However, it seemed that it was a collective understanding throughout the fandom that instead of a 2015 release, the game would be out next year instead. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a 2016 release date doesn’t seem to be the case either.

Make the jump for some more information.

Launch Dates

These are Nintendo’s launch dates of primary products based on regions. As you can see, most everything on this list has a release date, save for a few, including the next Zelda title. Combined with the news of the delay and the confirmation that Zelda Wii U will be a no show for this year’s E3, this is telling us- unfortunately- that a 2016 release date is very unlikely.

Some are speculating that because of this, Nintendo is actually gearing up to have Zelda Wii U as the release title of the new console they’ve announced to be under development; the NX. Could this be similar to the release of Twilight Princess, where the game was delayed in order to achieve compatibility on both the GameCube and the Wii? Is it possible that Zelda Wii U could be brought in the same way, bridging the gap between the Wii U and this new phantom console? Perhaps. We don’t know. Nintendo might not even know.

Here’s my thing with all this, though. I think that Nintendo should take their time. The Zelda franchise has been successfully running for the last- almost- thirty years. It’s had its ups and downs. But, with the way gaming is going and Nintendo spewing all these promises of a game unlike anything we have seen in the history of the series, I’m completely fine with them taking as long as they need to achieve that, for the players’ sake. I’d be far more disappointed in a game with half of it’s potential than the confirmation that the wait for said game may be longer than we all thought.

What about you guys? Wouldn’t you rather wait longer for an amazing game than have Nintendo release it as soon as possible and have it only as half as good as it could have been? Sure, the idea of a 2017 release date isn’t all that heartening; but could it be worth it? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
