Hello everybody, and welcome to this week’s edition of Zelda Dungeon Talks! Most of the time, when a new Zelda game is released, we see a few elements that were used in the previous game. An example of this would be instruments. Different versions of Ocarinas have been used throughout the series as well as Harps and even though it isn’t an instrument, the baton. So with the release of Zelda U being heavily anticipated amongst fans worldwide, what elements that have been used in a previous Zelda game would you like to see reappear in Zelda U?

In this week’s Zelda Dungeon Talks, various staff members will share with us the element from a past Zelda game they would like to see in Zelda U and why.

Question: What element from a past Zelda game would you like to see in Zelda U and why?

I would love to see a past game directly referenced as a historical event that is important to Zelda Wii U’s story. The Wind Waker took the story from Ocarina of Time and used it as the intro, but they told a story with the following events, and later in the game, the story threw back to Ocarina of Time’s events with Hyrule beneath the ocean, and with the characters themselves. This made for a sort of familiar feeling in a brand new world (that just so happened to be literally on top of the past game’s world). In Zelda Wii U, perhaps there could be ruins, remade bosses, literary records, or even actual unearthed weapons from a past game, but they could be relevant to the story, and/or the context of their presence. I know that making something new and fresh is what is important, but there is no need to throw away everything from the series’ past, There will always be traditional Zelda content in new titles, but they should be interesting for the player that experiences them.

I would love to have another companion be heavily tied to the game’s story. Not just thrown in and explained as the hero’s prophesied guide or designated to Link by some higher force. I’d like a companion like Midna who has an entire legacy all her or his own. However, I’m not sure that giving Link a partner would be conducive to an open-world setting in the first place. So maybe make the partner similar to Skyward Sword’s Impa crossed with the King of Red Lions– closely related to the story and met by Link at all his different destinations but not dragged behind him at all times.

I would love to see an instrument of some sort, be it the Ocarina, or a harp or even a new instrument. Playing melodies in order to solve puzzles and sidequests is one of my favourite things in Zelda. Also, a Navi/Fi style partner would be great, as I love getting encyclopedia style info on all of the enemies that I am fighting.

The snide thing to say would be “the parts that are good”, but I see myself as better than that. What I would love to see is plenty of interaction between Link and Zelda, ala the first half of Wind Waker. Having her be more involved with the adventure, helping Link as someone who’s actual proactive rather than a prisoner. Ideally she’d be Link’s adventuring partner, fighting alongside him and overcoming evil together, but we all know that’s not going to happen anytime soon. And an overworld filled to the brim with secrets and treasure for Link to find and expand his arsenal with ala A Link to the Past would be awesome as well.

It is difficult to truly pinpoint one aspect of a previous game that needs to find its way into Zelda U. Although many elements from various games have been transferred along the way, each game has brought a uniqueness to the series that is special to the franchise. The main aspect of all the Zelda games that I truly love is the story, some titles have done a better job than others in the sense of giving the player a fully fleshed out story to enjoy. For me this is the one thing that is a must-have for the upcoming Zelda title. Although I must say, I am in total agreement with Thomas on the fact that it would be nice to see Zelda much more involved in the adventure is a pretty great possibility. I truly enjoy the times when she is not just the damsel in need of saving.
