Nintendo is having a very exciting week! Even before the stunning announcement of a live-action Zelda film being in development, Nintendo revealed that the company had surpassed sales and revenue expectations for their most recent fiscal quarter. The higher-than-expected revenue is largely due to the strong performance of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and strong sales for Tears of the Kingdom.

The newest Zelda title has sold a total of 19.5 million units (the data for this quarter ends September 30th, 2023). Tears of the Kingdom was already the second-most successful Zelda game in terms of sales figures, but the game continues to edge higher and higher on Nintendo Switch’s best-selling games list.

In terms of hardware, Nintendo sold 6.84 million Nintendo Switch consoles between April to September. This figure includes sales from the the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch Lite. Overall, the 6.84 million units sold represents an 2.4% increase year-on-year. Nintendo has affirmed its forecast of selling 15 million Switch consoles for the current fiscal year. While Nintendo had a strong quarter, Nintendo’s revenue fell 4% year-on-year and its profit dropped around 19%. As the Nintendo Switch moves into the end of its life cycle, it will be interesting to see how Nintendo’s revenue and profits change.

Nintendo has also updated their list of the best-selling first-party Nintendo Switch titles of all time. Keep in mind that this list only includes sales data up until September 30th, 2023, so sales numbers beyond that date will be included in the next update:

  1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 57.01 million
  2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 43.38 million
  3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 32.44 million
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 31.15 million
  5. Super Mario Odyssey – 26.95 million
  6. Pokémon Sword and Shield – 26.02 million
  7. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet – 23.23 million
  8. Super Mario Party – 19.66 million
  9. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – 19.50 million
  10. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 16.70 million

Looking at Tears of the Kingdom‘s position in the top ten rankings, it will be interesting to see how far the game will climb over the next year. The game will easily pass Super Mario Party (19.66 million), but its next real milestone will be Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (23.23 million). With the November-December holiday season around the corner, it is possible that Tears of the Kingdom could approach Pokémon Scarlet and Violet‘s total sales by the time Nintendo announces next quarter’s sales information.
