Skyward Sword Dungeon Ranking

The Legend of Zelda series is known for many things, one of which being its challenging and memorable dungeons. The feeling you get after all the hard work of completing a new dungeon for the first time is something many of us look forward to while playing. Taking on a dungeon, solving all the puzzles, getting a new item, defeating the boss, and progressing the story gives me a feeling that no other game has come close too.

The Zelda Series has many unforgettable dungeons and Skyward Sword is no exception. Although the entire land below Skyloft is almost a dungeon by itself, the actual dungeons are not to be taken lightly and it just makes completing a dungeon that much more rewarding. Not only do you finish a new dungeon, but you also solve all the puzzles and conquer the land around it. So how do the dungeons of Skyward Sword hold up to each other? Make the jump to read my opinion and to give everyone your own.

7. Lanayru Mining Facility – Not only did I find this as the most challenging dungeon, but just making my way to it seemed like i was getting lost for hours at a time. While playing through it I was expecting extremely hard puzzles and getting stuck on the most obvious ones. For example after hitting the time shift stone in one of the rooms you have to use the gust bellow to open a door. I used my beetle to fly around the room and seen another door with the same puzzle and new I had to do it there, but I overlooked the fan above the gate I was at. All of the obvious “in your face” puzzles were so simple I ended up overlooking half of them.

6. Skyview Temple – I actually enjoyed this dungeon so I have nothing against it, but while it took me a couple of hours to find it, I actually completed it in what seemed like less than 30 minutes. Although when I was making my through it I did find it challenging. It was easy compared to dungeons I would later encounter and overall just seemed like a training course.

5. Earth Temple – The second dungeon in the game. It is pretty straight forward and only had a few challenging spots. I had a lot of fun playing through it and loved that the boss fight was a twist on the second dungeon boss of Ocarina of Time. A very nice throwback if you ask me!

4. Sky Keep – The final dungeon in the game and basically a mosh up of all the previous dungeons thrown into one giant puzzle. We use special statues to move the order of the rooms around like a jigsaw puzzle to get to our next desired location. I thought it was a great idea and even though we actually collect the pieces of the Triforce in this dungeon, I really didn’t seem to enjoy it as much as others and the lack of a boss fight disappointed me.

3. Fire Sanctuary – I started this dungeon expecting it to be as great as the fire temple of OoT and even expected to have Volvagia as the boss, but instead we get gloves to crawl through a hole and Ghirahim again as a boss. Maybe I would have actually enjoyed it more if my expectations weren’t so high, but it still managed to become one of my favorites of the game.

2. Ancient Cistern – This dungeon is water based, but still unlike water dungeons that we have become used too. It isn’t nearly as difficult as I expected from past experiences, but I still found myself enjoying the creative uses of the whip and fell in love with the boss fight. I mean using your enemies own weapon to chop its limbs off and defeat it is a pretty fun experience, although I was expecting a boss that was actually water based.

1. Sandship – One of the most well thought out dungeons in the entire game, but while I was playing through it I found myself absolutely loving it because it was so different that it didn’t even feel like a dungeon at all. I have never played a dungeon like this before. It was straight forward and had an appropriate difficulty for its placement in the game. I love giant boss battles and loved finally using the bow! It was hard to pick my favorite dungeon in the game, but the Sandship barely squeezes in to first.

While all of the dungeons of Skyward Sword are great and unique in their own way I found myself having fun in some while struggling in others. These are my thoughts on the dungeons, but let me hear yours. Let us know how your list goes and reasons why in the comments below.
