British power metal superstars DragonForce are no strangers to video games. Rhythm game fans, for example, may remember the group’s classic track “Through the Fire and Flames” acting as the ultimate challenge in 2007’s Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Well, DragonForce and the realms of gaming have intersected once again, and, this time, The Legend of Zelda is the point of intersection.

DragonForce announced their ninth studio album Warp Speed Warriors earlier this week (due out March 15th, 2024) and released a new single to mark the occasion. That single just so happens to be a Zelda-inspired tour de force titled “Power of the Triforce.”

Guitarist Herman Li had this to say about the new track:

“We’re thrilled to unveil our latest track, a powerful homage inspired by one of our favorite video-game franchises, Zelda! We’re eager for metal enthusiasts of all tastes to discover something special within its depths. Brace yourselves, as we’re gearing up to unleash this sonic adventure live during our upcoming tours!”

“Power of the Triforce” carries all the hallmarks of DragonForce songwriting, from the frantic drumming of Gee Anzalone, to the operatic vocals of Marc Hudson, to the face-melting guitar solos of Sam Totman and Herman Li. But the group’s signature sound is elevated here by its many references to The Legend of Zelda. Hyrule, Ganon, the Twilight Princess, the Master Sword, and the elements of the Triforce are all referenced in the song’s lyrics.

The track’s music video, despite a rupee or two, carries much less of the Zelda influence unfortunately. Rather than including iconography or characters from the games, which would have likely required cooperation from Nintendo, the video instead features a more generic fantasy aesthetic, with the band defending a castle from orcs and an evil sorcerer. Even during a sequence involving the band members attempting to pull a sword from a pedestal, Ocarina of Time-style, the sword itself bears little resemblance to the Zelda series’ trademark Master Sword. (Note to the band: Never grip the blade of a sword with your bare hands).

DragonForce’s upcoming studio album Warp Speed Warriors, including “Power of the Triforce,” is planned for release on March 15th, 2024.
