Update: Chinese Nintendo on YouTube has uploaded the first 20 minutes of the newly updated version of Twilight Princess on the Nvidia Shield. You can watch the entire video embedded above or right here. If you’d like to compare this new footage to the upscaled 1080p version of Twilight Princess originally released on the Shield in 2017, check out this video.

Original: In 2017, Nvidia, the company responsible for the Nintendo Switch’s processor, brought updated versions of several Nintendo Wii games to the Nvidia Shield in China. Among the games included on the platform was Twilight Princess, released originally for the Nintendo GameCube / Wii in 2006 and later remastered in HD for the Wii U in 2016. Earlier this week, an Nvidia press release revealed that the company has released an impressive update for the Shield version of Twilight Princess. According to the information from Nvidia, this update improves over 4,400 textures using their “deep learning technology”.

The photos below show some of the differences between the version of Twilight Princess originally released on the Shield in 2017 and this newly updated version. The original Shield release involved upscaling the game’s textures to 1080p, while the new update includes completely enhanced textures through so-called “deep learning”. The differences can best be seen in the comparison photo of Zora’s Domain shared by Nvidia.

The update also beefs up the file size from 1.3GB to 4.07GB. Ultimately, the update is a significant improvement that puts the game far ahead of the previous version on Nvidia Shield, but not quite on the level of the Wii U HD release. At this point, it is unknown if the “deep learning technology” will be used to improve the other games on the Nvidia Shield, like Super Mario Galaxy. Regardless, it’s intriguing to see another company working to update and tweak Nintendo’s games.
