Set in what appears to be a post-apocalyptic world, Toasty is an upcoming Zelda-like Action RPG “with some unique twists”. The game is being developed by Pocket Llama Studios, a team of all-stars with credentials of having formerly worked on Sonic Mania with Sega, Skullgirls by Lab Zero Games, and the Breath of the Wild-inspired The Legend’s Cookbook.

The protagonist of Toasty is a Marshmallow Knight named Marshell. This unlikely Hero will embark on a quest “to stop an all-powerful evil and protect friends in the magical world of Geldia. All the while, they will discover the truth of their mysterious origins.” It is described as playing like older Zelda games, and after playing a bit of the demo for myself, I’d say it seems mostly inspired by games like A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening. I didn’t play too far into the game, only enough to get an impression of it – and I enjoyed what I’ve seen so far!

There are a lot of quirky characters and dialogue that made me laugh, and the gameplay and combat seem pretty straightforward, as is to be expected from a game influenced by top-down Zelda games. I was only faced with one puzzle while I played, and it had me scratching my head for a bit. The solution turned out to be quite clever considering Marshell is a marshmallow. Eventually, I got up to what I believe is the game’s first dungeon, where I ended up dying tragically, prompting me to take a short break. That said, if you interact with all the NPCs, complete one available side quest, and all the demo’s main content, it can last about 45 minutes according to the game’s creator. So if you’re interested, definitely check out the demo for yourself!

Pocket Llama has launched a Kickstarter Campaign for the game today. Their goal for funding is $35,000 USD, and exclusive backer rewards include T-shirts, stickers, posters, plus opportunities to have fan ideas influence the game. There will also be weekly giveaways hosted by Pocket Llama throughout the campaign; one of the prizes will be a custom item from Kraken Keyboards! To wrap things up, Toasty will be released on PC, but stretch goals are to get it onto the Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4 as well, and that’s something I’d love to see!
