About a month ago, rumor spread of a

Netflix original in the works based on The Legend of Zelda series. The Internet exploded with fan remarks on how this would either ruin the series or bring it to a new form of media in a fun way. The reaction was so strong that a petition to kill the show was created, even before it was officially announced. It is important to note that at this time, it is still just a rumor. However, one person who remained positive about it was popular YouTube Zelda fan, Katie Wilson. I recently had the privilege to speak with Katie about her response video which she released on the day that the news was made.

Jei: Could you tell us a little about yourself and what made you want to become a YouTube vlogger?

Katie: I like to consider myself the “Girl next door with a geeky edge.” I grew up loving all things medieval, fantasy, geek, gamer related and really wanted an outlet where I could share my passions with an audience who likes the same things. My goal has always been to work my way up to creating shorts, sketches, and parodies on a regular basis.

What is it about Medieval Fantasy that draws you to genre favorites like The Legend of Zelda and “Game of Thrones”?

I think growing up watching Xena Warrior Princess as well as classic Disney movies, I always had a love and interest in castles, mythology, sword fighting, etc… The Legend of Zelda was the first console game I ever played and it remains my very favorite! The Legend of Zelda series & Game of Thrones did an incredible job of creating these fantastical worlds with magic, fairies, and dragons and I think that is the reason I am so drawn to them.

You’ve stated multiple times that Ocarina of Time is your favorite Zelda game. Other than that, what other games in the series really stuck out to you and why are they special?

Nothing will ever beat OoT!!! BUT, I did really enjoy Twilight Princess. I loved seeing the franchise in a darker, grittier setting.

Just over a year ago, you posted a video stating that you really wanted to see a Zelda movie, and now Netflix may be going a step further via this TV Show, causing a lot of negative uproar in the Zelda community. Some people, like you, have a positive attitude towards the project since Netflix promises a “Game of Thrones for the family” feel. What potential do you see in the show that could prove better than many others believe?

I have to see something for myself before I can even judge it, so there really is no point in being negative! Plus I’m such an optimistic person, I would love to see a Legend of Zelda TV series do well! I understand other people’s point of views and why they could be upset, but personally I think it could be an awesome opportunity to watch my favorite game franchise unfold on a TV show. Unfortunately nothing official has been confirmed by Nintendo or Netflix, but if this indeed comes to fruition, I think it’s going to be stellar! Netflix has a great reputation of creating quality content and when they say “Game of Thrones for the family” I think they are simply referring to style. I think a Legend of Zelda series should be more for a mature audience, but at the same time, that 12 year old kid sitting playing Majora’s Mask on his 3DS XL should still be able to enjoy it. Also cast is a HUGE deal. It could totally make or break a series.

What are your thoughts on what we’ve seen so far about Zelda U?

IT LOOKS AMAZING!!!!! I cannot wait to get my hands on it. Love the graphics and the more “open world” feel. I’m really looking forward to seeing more from the game!

What does the future hold for “The Legend of Katie” in 2015?

Hopefully some larger scale shorts, skits, & parodies! I definitely want to create some fun Legend of Zelda content, so hopefully that can happen!

Katie’s channel, The Legend of Katie, has always focused on the medieval types of content, from “Game of Thrones” to

The Legend of Zelda and is a personal favorite of mine. She uploaded her first video on July 12, 2012, but that was far from her first appearance in media. Before that, she had also appeared on Scream Team, Black Nerd Comedy, and the the web series, “Walking In Circles”. Since then, she has nearly reached 60,000 subscribers and continues to grow with her content encompassing video games, cons, Disney, “Game of Thrones”, and regular Q&As, proving that she enjoys connecting with her fans. If you love fantasy worlds, video games, or just nerdy media in general, I highly suggest following Katie on her YouTube channel.

So, now it’s time for you to speak. Since the dust has settled from the rumor, how do you feel about the idea of a

Zelda inspired TV show now? Are you still completely against it, or are you with Katie in that you are excited at the possibility that it could actually be something amazing? Do you follow The Legend of Katie? Let us know in the comments below.
