Gunman Clive is a budget 3DS eShop title and platformer which was heavily influenced by the Mega Man franchise and has been a huge success story for the one-man development studio: Hörberg Productions, with the 3DS game outselling both Android and iOS versions combined. The studio is now starting work on a brand new title for the 3DS which, according to it’s developer Bertil Hörberg, is inspired by the early games in the Zelda series, in particular A Link to the Past and will have both a top-down perspective and 3D graphics.

It’s still very early in development and a lot of the design isn’t finalized, but it’s very heavily inspired by the early Zelda games; it uses a topdown perspective with 3D graphics and it’s for the 3DS. The artstyle is fairly different from the new Zelda but has some influences from [A Link to the Past] as well, so yes I think comparisons will certainly be made [to A Link to the Past 2].

I think most players realize that my resources are rather more limited though and I wouldn’t presume to be in direct competition with Nintendo. I just hope people will be up for a bit more old-school action adventure gameplay regardless.

Whilst the game is still in development I think it will be very exciting to see how it turns out. I personally adored Gunman Clive, thinking that its use of 3D was quite fantastic and that its action-packed levels are without a doubt some of the best on the eShop to date. It’s always fun to see new takes on classic games and there’s no better classic game than A Link to the Past, the game which introduces many of the main elements in Zelda which we know and love. However they could be walking in dangerous territory, as the game will have lots to live up to if it’s going to truly try to capture the essence of A Link to the Past. Has this lone indie developer got what it takes? One thing is clear: if they manage to make their next title as good as their last they will certainly be looking at another eShop best-seller.

But what do you think? Have you played Gunman Clive? Would you like to see more games which take their inspiration from Zelda? Leave your opinions in the comments below!
