GenGAME: Which Zelda Game Looks Best in HD?

Games do not need HD graphics to look good. A statement sometimes resented in the gaming community, but games such as The Wind Waker and Skyward Sword have shown gamers that a game can indeed look beautiful without the need for HD graphics. That being said however, it is still undeniable that HD graphics do improve upon the look of games substantially and eliminates the slight out-of-focus look associated with standard-resolution graphics, which are now often considered sub-standard. Our sister site, GenGAME has posed an interesting question in terms of how HD graphics would affect the look of Zelda; to be more precise, out of the three most recent home-console Zelda games, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, which looks the best when converted into HD? Hit the jump to find out more!

Below are three videos which show all three games in HD. The videos pertaining The Wind Waker and Skyward Sword also showcase the games in standard resolution to provide a more accurate comparison between the two, while the Twilight Princess video merely shows the game in full HD throughout. It is advised in the first two videos that you switch to 1080p and full-screen mode when watching the videos to gain a full view of just what the Dolphin Emulator used in the videos can do. See all three videos below and judge for yourself which looks the best!

There is no denying that all of them look breathtaking, but in my opinion the Twilight Princess upgrade had the most profound effect on the visuals of the game. Perhaps it’s the fact that the game’s realistic graphics simply lends itself naturally well to HD graphics but seeing the overworld in HD looks phenomenal. The same goes for The Wind Waker upgrade, as the cel-shaded graphics really shine with the vibrant colors and the clean lines truly refining the graphics to remind us why we fell in love with the game’s graphics in the first place. Skyward Sword does look excellent in HD but I couldn’t help notice sometimes that some of the backgrounds used in the game which were blurred on purpose to save on memory space and to add to the Impressionist art style of the game look a bit out of place when placed behind the sharp goings-on in the foreground. However, this is just a minor complaint as the majority of the rest of the game look fantastic, with the Skyview Temple in particular shining with its trademark iridescent beauty.

You can vote in the poll on GenGAME here. Twilight Princess is currently leading the way with 59% of the overall votes, with The Wind Waker currently last with only 17% of the total votes. But which one do you think looks best in HD? Cast your vote in the poll then tell us in the comments below!
