There are few moments as peaceful and beautiful as sitting to watch the sun rise in a video game. I remember reverently waiting for dawn to break over the tranquil waters of Lake Hylia in Ocarina of Time. I was so entranced, watching the night sky yield to the palest cornflower blue, that I entirely missed my shot at getting the fire arrows.

There are plenty of times while playing when I have disengaged from the overarching story just to slow down and take everything in. In the Spirit Temple, I explored every nook and cranny just to find anything cool to me. No in-game reward, just the satisfaction of spending more time in an environment I found so enchanting.

Based off the critical acclaim Breath of the Wild is still receiving, I’m guessing I’m not the only player who has routinely paused to admire the flowers along the way. But I definitely prefer some flowers more than others. I could spend literal days exploring every snowy field or desert town I find, but swamps? Nah. I can’t wait to get out of there, never to return again.

I’m sure every player has preferences for one environment over another. Perhaps you’re the kind of player who loves getting lost in the sky, traversing from cloud to cloud. Maybe you’re the kind of player that thoroughly enjoys visiting cities and towns, talking with the denizens and racking up loot from mini-games. I’m sure there are even those of you who would rather chill out in a fish deity’s belly all day than do literally anything else. Odd, but good for you!

So, do you have a preferred environment in Zelda games? What is it, and which game had the best version of that preference? What’s the coolest thing you’ve seen while exploring? Let us know in the comments!
