The Zelda series is one that is not only deeply seeded in lore, but also has enough wiggle-room to encourage branches upon branches of theories. In fact, one of Nintendo’s main goals with the Zelda series is to balance those two things. Although it is simplistic to boil an entire series down so simply, I believe that Mario games are a sandbox for gameplay and Zelda games are a sandbox for where your imagination can take you. There are exceptions to both, but you can’t deny that the Zelda series boasts one of the most iconic and immersive worlds in pop culture.

As a result, there is no shortage of fan theories — from YouTube video to a chaotic post on X (formerly known as Twitter) — ranging from queries that aim to interconnect the games or quandaries that work in just a specific game. Regardless, the idea of theorizing and debating those theories are one of the core essences of the Zelda fandom. In fact, it’s the premise of our Daily Debate segments as a whole, engaging people in vivid, varied, and sometimes voracious dialogues pertaining to the sprawling adventures in Hyrule.

One of my favorite fan theories is, of course, the theory that Link and Zelda forged a romantic relationship after Skyward Sword, eventually giving literal birth to the kingdom of Hyrule as we know it. However, that is one that is sadly not confirmed, and thus one I remember very well not being confirmed. A theory that I often do forget isn’t actually real is the theory that the Kokiri/Koroks are shapeshifters, that they took the form of Hylian children in Ocarina of Time to make Link feel more at home before he became the hero, and are just Koroks otherwise.

What theory makes so much sense that you forget it’s just a theory? What do you feel like is the most popular theory? What theories do you think are absolutely ridiculous? Let us know in the comments below!
