We’ve talked a lot about Zelda U‘s announcement lately and we’ve speculated just as much about the game’s story in the past. With Zelda U delayed to 2016 or beyond, we shouldn’t expect to hear a whole lot about its story at least until next year. However, that doesn’t mean that each of us doesn’t have certain expectations for the adventure that awaits us in this future game. So, let’s spend some time discussing what we expect and want to see in Zelda U.

Based on what we’ve seen in the announcement videos, it’s difficult to accurately place Zelda U in any one point on the Zelda timeline. Thus, it’s extremely difficult to hammer down any details on the main conflict that Link has to face. The overworld seems to be evoking the Hyrule of Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess (albeit much bigger), but the presence of advanced technology could put the game anywhere in the Zelda canon. Therefore we’re only left to present our own expectations on the plot of the game.

Personally, I hope the game is set before Ocarina of Time, before the rise of Ganondorf. Instead of the series’ primary antagonist, I would much rather see Zelda U explore the character of Demise more thoroughly. For me, what made Ganondorf such an endearing villain in the first place was how he was characterized in Ocarina of Time. Serving as a sort of origins story for Ganon, OoT slowly built up his threat throughout the game, perfectly setting the stage for his character in later games. I would really like to see that same treatment for Demise. Like the shallow characterizations of Ganon in early games, Demise is not quite as fleshed out as he could be. So, like Ocarina of Time did for Ganondorf, I want to see Zelda U build up Demise as a complex, long-lasting villain. I hope to see Link’s ultimate struggle in the game to be against a well-developed Demise.

But those are just my expectations. What story expectations do you hold for Zelda U? What story elements and conflicts do you hope to see? Let us know in the comments and join the Daily Debate!
