Daily Debate: Should Breath Of The Wild Have A Seasonal Cycle?
Posted on March 18 2020 by Brittany Lindstrom
If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s a magical time to be outdoors. The final wisps of winter are retreating, and the promise of spring is in every gust of wind. But finding time to enjoy the transition of the seasons can be difficult in the modern world. When you’re always tied to a desk in the office, the first flowers of spring can easily escape your notice.
The day and night cycle in Breath of the Wild added realism and challenge to the game. Coupled with the weather system, players experienced a living, breathing Hyrule. Still, these systems only hold up for so long. During a typical playthrough, Link spends years on his quest. Yet, the world as a whole does not follow the greater passage of time. We never see Hyrule field covered in snow and the Akkala Wilds are permanently locked in Autumn.
The lack of seasons or festivals can easily be attributed to Link living in a desolate world. Breath of the Wild 2, in theory, will show Hyrule in recovery. Much like in Animal Crossing, a season cycle could add another layer of depth for players to explore. Perhaps, Link could only find certain cooking ingredients during fall. Or, maybe a series of dungeons only accessible during certain seasons could be explored. Of course, the addition of seasons would add alot of work to the development team.
So, what do you think? Would the addition of a season cycle be a welcome addition to Breath of the Wild 2? What sorts of activities or challenges would you like to see added? Or is the whole concept silly and best left on the cutting room floor? Let us know in the comments below!
