Direct sequels in the Zelda series are few and far in between, but something I think almost all of the direct sequels have in common is their ability to innovate on their predecessor while offering something new and exciting. Majora’s Mask is arguably the best example of incorporating elements from Ocarina of Time while adding something fresh and new to both the gameplay and story. The three day cycle was unique and led to some fantastic sidequests and gameplay features.

For Breath of the Wild 2, I think it could take Breath of the Wild‘s best feature — open world exploration — but streamline it and do something new. Breath of the Wild‘s expansive open world experience was extremely enjoyable, but I’m not sure the sequel would benefit from following in its footsteps. Large-scale dungeons were something I realized I greatly missed after going back and playing some of the older installments again, and I think bringing back these dungeons would be beneficial. If the story and exploration could be more linear, such as if Link and Zelda leave Hyrule and go to a new region (and perhaps return if catastrophe befalls Hyrule again), that would be a way to have the sequel retain some of the features Breath of the Wild offered. If it can innovate and offer something new, I think that might make the entry stronger. What do you think? Do you want to see Breath of the Wild 2 be more linear and dungeon-focused?
