The Wind Waker has always shared an interesting spot in the Zelda series’ release chronology. Released in 2003, The Wind Waker debuted after what is widely considered one of the best Zelda games ever and departed in some significant ways from that predecessor. I’m of course talking about 1998’s Ocarina of Time and 2000’s Majora’s Mask. With a wildly different aesthetic, many fans questioned whether The Wind Waker would also drift in terms of gameplay.

Upon release, many mechanics that made the grade in Ocarina of Time transferred over to The Wind Waker with some additional improvements that would heavily influence its successor game, Twilight Princess, such as sword combat techniques like the dodge and parry. Instead of riding Epona around, sailing on the King of Red Lions became the new travel method, though again, this was different mostly just in aesthetics and combined the idea of a companion with that of your transport. This was done again in Twilight Princess where Midna served both as companion, fast travel mechanic, and additionally your transformation key.

Being the middle child certainly can have its benefits as well as its awkwardness. So we pose this question to you, the fans! Is The Wind Waker more similar to Ocarina of Time, or Twilight Princess? Let us know in the comments below!

This Daily Debate idea was suggested by Zelda Dungeon’s very own Josh.
