Daily Debate: Does Twilight Princess Receive More Criticism Than A Link Between Worlds for Bringing Ganon Back?
Posted on February 20 2020 by Sean Gadus
Twilight Princess and A Link Between Worlds have many keys differences, but both game have some strikingly similar story decisions. Crucially, both stories include a new villain– Zant in Twilight Princess, and Yuga in A Link Between Worlds– who are superseded by the return of Ganon. While the situations are not exactly the same, both games introduce original antagonists before shifting the story’s focus to the most famous Zelda antagonist.
While both games share this key plot point, the fan and critical reception of the two moments within their respective games has been quite different. Twilight Princess is usually criticized for the way its third act takes the focus off of Zant and onto the previously unseen (but clearly hinted at) Ganondorf. In contrast, the return of Ganon and his merging with Yuga in A Link Between Worlds generally receives less criticism than its 2006 counterpart, perhaps because the event results in an intriguing final fight against the grotesque “Yuga Ganon”.
With this in mind, do you think Twilight Princess received a disproportionate amount of criticism for its version of reviving Ganondorf? Is the scenario with Zant and Ganondorf more poorly executed than the similar scenario between Yuga and Ganon? If these moments are significantly different, what story choices or reasons demonstrate the differences between the two?
