When I first watched the trailer for the Breath of the Wild sequel, I excitedly texted my roommates about it and mentioned that I was getting “Majora’s Mask vibes” from it. The unnerving background music, the dark visuals, the dramatic cuts, the reanimated corpse, Zelda seemingly coming face-to-face with this horrific being — the whole thing was creepy, and intentionally so. And I wasn’t the only one who saw possible parallels — multiple fans caught on to the darker tone of the trailer, and in an interview with Eiji Aonuma, he stated that, “…it’s not necessarily going to be related to Majora’s Mask or inspired by it…What we showed you currently is a little darker.”

I appreciate this clarification, because I think whether or not it’s intentionally meant to be similar to Majora’s Mask, this first trailer has already given us a glimpse of something terrifying that — feels — the same. Part of what made Majora’s Mask such a dark and celebrated installment in the Zelda series was its ability to create situations that were scary against the backdrop of Termina. On the surface, Termina feels like a normal world, but it doesn’t take long to realize that there is something sinister happening behind the scenes. To this day, the mask transformation sequences in Majora’s Mask give me chills because of the way they’re animated and the lighting.

If the Breath of the Wild sequel takes a similar approach with a new story in the beautiful land of Hyrule that we’ve come to know that finally has a chance to be rebuilt, and creates something genuinely terrifying, I think this sequel could have the potential to be as celebrated as Majora’s Mask for having that unique edge. What do you guys think? Do you think the Breath of the Wild has the potential to be more dark and scary than Majora’s Mask? Let us know in the comments!
