Spoiler Warning: This article and the comments section may contain spoilers for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

When I first booted up Tears of the Kingdom and got to the Sky Islands, I was immediately intrigued by Rauru’s character. Throughout the tutorial, Rauru could be found standing next to Steward Constructs or sitting on the cliffside. I particularly enjoyed hearing his reminiscence about the Temple of Time and how they would listen to the bells. It was also around that time that I foolishly thought, “I like this character, I hope he sticks around somehow.” Much like King Rhoam in Breath of the Wild, Rauru’s spirit disappears when you complete the tutorial, though he can be seen in the past through unlockable Memories.

The characterization of Rauru in these Memories also makes him a far more interesting character. Unlike Rhoam, whose overbearingness of Zelda to the point of cruelty presents him as harsh and unlikable (even if it does add to Zelda’s arc), Rauru has more depth. He is kind and supportive of Zelda, but he also has a sense of humor when they first meet. He’s a caring yet flawed ruler and showcases considerable strength and power. It’s all great, and maybe it’s because he’s a compelling character that I would have liked to see him appear in the present, too. Maybe after completing each dungeon and awakening the next Sage, Rauru could offer some insight or support and only Link would be able to converse with him.

What do you think? Should Rauru have appeared more in the main story outside of the tutorial and Memories? Let us know in the comments!
