Across several games, time travel is an important component of the story. Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Oracle of Ages, and Skyward Sword all utilize aspects of time travel to tell their stories, and they all do it well. Each game takes advantage of the unique situations that time traveling can bring, influencing the characters and the story significantly as a result. Even on a smaller scale, time travel reappears in Twilight Princess, and while it is largely for the sake of dungeon design, it still creates a unique experience.

As much as time travel has been relied on to create meaningful stories in the Zelda series to the point that it may feel abused by some, I think that it’s still a unique storytelling device that still has room to explore new ideas. After all, there are different facets of time travel and theories that the games have yet to address, with the multiverse and shifting world lines being a particularly interesting time travel theory that could be explored in a unique and exciting way through the lens of the Zelda games. What do you think, do you like the time travel aspects of the Zelda games? Do you think time travel could reappear as a plot device? Let us know in the comments!
