I’ll never forget the joy of huddling under blankets with a flashlight, sneaking a few more minutes of reading the Legend of Zelda instruction booklet, hoping my parents wouldn’t catch me. Another page, a closer look at that image, and I just knew I could unlock the secrets of my favorite Nintendo game. Sadly, this is the bliss of a bygone era; Nintendo no longer includes manuals with its games. But Etsy artist Rowan Fox-Noble has given fans another chance with his fan-made Nintendo Switch instruction booklets.

Rowan explains, “Retro is nearest and dearest to [my] heart.” His first project was creating a Super Mario 64-style instruction booklet for Super Mario Odyssey. His inspiration, he explains, began with a frustration that Nintendo included plastic clips inside its game cases, but no manual. He played around with handcrafting his own for sentimental reasons, before finding a system that works. He’s streamlined the process now and has offerings for four major Switch titles, including Link’s Awakening, Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Each instruction booklet is made with great care and is customized to fit the specific game. For example, his Link’s Awakening manual is a loving refresh of the classic Game Boy version, while the Breath of the Wild booklet helps organize the many missions and side quests players can tackle. The booklets range in price from $10.00 USD to $16.00 USD.

Fox-Noble recently started a new project, as he is attempting to translate the instruction pamphlet for Paper Mario: The Origami King, which Nintendo has only released in Japanese. Check out his Twitter and Etsy page for more information.
