From the recently released VR mode via Nintendo Labo to the continued devotion of the modding community, Breath of the Wild players have found numerous ways to keep the game fresh and exciting even two years after its initial release. In fact, one new mod that has drawn a lot of the attention online allows players to see the game from an entirely new perspective.

The appropriately titled “First Person View” mod for Breath of the Wild, which runs on the CEMU emulator, lets players experience the entire game through Link’s eyes. Developed by MelonSpeedruns, SushiiZ, and Silentverge, this mod breathes new life into the latest Zelda adventure. Every part of the game, from exploration to combat, can be performed from a first-person perspective.

And according to the mod’s overview page, players can tweak their first-person experience even further:

“This version of the First Person View mod includes 3 different versions that you can choose depending on your likings.

  • DefaultFOV is the regular and recommended FOV for both VR and PC users.
  • WiderFOV allows to see more around you. It feels really good in VR but it tends to make objects in the distance more pixellated than the other options.
  • NarrowerFOV allows to see less around you. It allows the game to be less pixelated in VR, but can sometimes feel weird. It works best for PC users.”

The CEMU emulator can maintain 60 frames per second at whatever resolution a user’s PC can crank out, so this first-person mod can be absolutely stunning in motion, especially when the game is run on higher resolutions. Seeing Hyrule again from this new perspective reminded me of just how beautiful Breath of the Hyrule was, allowing me to recapture the initial amazement I felt at the time of the game’s release. BSoD Gaming on YouTube recently showcased the mod in 4K resolution, so be sure to check out the action right here.

As demonstrated by BSoD Gaming in another video, this mod can also be used in tandem with a few additional programs to achieve a first-person VR mode in Breath of the Wild, complete with head tracking. While the whole process to set up this VR mode can be a bit complicated, the results speak for themselves. As shown here, this first-person VR mode is more in line with what gamers imagined when Nintendo first announced their Breath of the Wild VR experience via Nintendo Labo. And it seems this first-person VR mode is already garnering a more positive reception than the official VR experience.
