Breath of the Wild is an expansive world. While light on story content in its ruined state, Hyrule certainly has a vast array of nooks and crannies to be explored. Even a bare-bones run of the game between the main villages, Divine Beasts, and Hyrule Castle will take you through quite a few different environments. To stay engaged with Breath of the Wild, some players impose rules upon themselves for heightened challenge. And here is a prime example of that play style. Twitter user everest has recently completed a complex run of Breath of the Wild with a punishing ruleset.

For those who may not be aware, the Hero’s Path portion of the game’s DLC marks everywhere that Link has traveled with a continuous line. Everest decided to complete the main story of Breath of the Wild without ever letting that line cross over itself. Classic arcade and PC games such as Snake and Tron inspired this challenge. In those games, the player character grows longer and longer as they move along a top-down track. As the tail grows, the amount of space to travel in shrinks. If the player bumps into their own tail, it’s game over.

Playing Breath of the Wild with a Snake-styled ruleset proved to be a difficult feat. Each new step taken would cut off access to past areas. Everest had to move in very careful and circuitous routes to avoid boxing their progress into a corner. In fact, Everest had to restart at least six times over the eight months that this run took to complete.

If this concept piques your interest, you can check out the stream for the challenge run on Everest’s YouTube channel.

What did you think of the run? Would you have the patience to play the game in this manner? Let us know in the comments.
