The Hero of Hyrule has a distinct silhouette and a number of iconic visual traits. Through Link’s simple, yet masterful character design, artists have been able to iterate on him countless ways over his 35 years. Whether being rendered as a decked-out adventurer or a roundish elf boy, even non-fans would probably recognize him. Even if they say, “Oh, that’s Zelda, right?”.

Arguably Link’s most enduring look comes from Ocarina of Time. Games featuring a mature Link thereafter would take Ocarina‘s design cues forward. Now as we wait for the summer release of Skyward Sword HD, a masterful artist on YouTube by the name of Dr. Garuda shares his take on the Hero of Time.

In this procedural video, watch Dr. Gerudo – ahem! Garuda – bring Link to life from scale drawing to painted statue.

The subject of the sculpt is described as Link from Ocarina of Time. However, we see the artist take inspiration from the manga as well. The video’s details and comments also explain other goals and influences for the look of the piece.

At each step in the process, Dr. Garuda shows a deft hand and serious skill. The fifteen minutes are well worth your time to see him sketch, structure, model, and paint. I was particularly impressed by the countless addition of small clay strips that became belts, pouches, and costume embellishments.

Dr. Garuda has an exciting library of past sculpts at his channel. If you start with Link, I also recommend checking out his Attack on Titan series and Daft Punk project.

Did you enjoy watching this sculpture take shape? What’s your favorite look for Link? Share your thoughts in the comments!
